Diabetes and Obesity Panel

Diabetes and Obesity Panel

  • Obesity means having too much body fat and occurs over time when the consumption of calories is higher than the usage of those calories. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Factors that might affect weight include genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods, and not being physically active (1). Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both (2). Several genes have been identified to be associated with obesity and diabetes. Furthermore, gene-lifestyle interaction studies suggest that genetic susceptibility to obesity and type 2 diabetes may be partially or totally kept under control by healthy lifestyle or lifestyle modifications (3). Genetic testing is crucial in identifying these genes for an early diagnosis and change in lifestyle in order to either control or prevent the diseases.
