Melanoma Panel

Melanoma Panel

  • Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It develops when DNA damage is not repaired giving rise to mutations that lead some skin cells (melanocytes) to multiply more rapidly than surrounding skin cells; the result is the formation of malignant tumors that can develop anywhere on the skin (1). Melanoma is not the most common skin cancer, but it is the most serious type of skin cancer (2) with a significant mortality rate. It has been estimated that melanoma kills 10,130 people in the US annually (3). However, when found and treated early, the cure rate is nearly 100%. Although ultraviolet radiation is a major contributor in many melanoma cases, heredity also plays a role. Research has shown that if a close blood relative had melanoma, a person has a much greater risk of getting it as well (4).
